Pizza Hut Expands to Ethiopia

The American food chain Pizza Hut has opened two outlets in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, becoming the first major International fast food franchise to set up in the country. But will Ethiopians take to Western fast foods? With a swiftly growing population already in excess of 100-million people, seems a logical next step for Pizza Hut. But the price point, at 130 birr (£3.43) for a small pizza, could restrict growth. Pizza Hut’s parent company, Yum! Brands, (also owner of KFC and Taco Bell restaurant chains), is investing heavily in Africa and working with franchises to expand its presence across the continent. With more than one billion people, 53 countries and consumer spending predicted to reach $2.5 trillion by 2020, the company sees an opportunity for growth in Africa.
